Age of Sigmar
Age of Sigmar is divided into four Grand Alliances—Order, Chaos, Death, and Destruction—each of which contains multiple factions with distinct looks, lore, and playstyles. Below is a brief introduction to each alliance and some of their key factions.
Grand Alliance Order
Order are the “defenders” of the Mortal Realms: civilizations trying to build cities and keep Chaos, Death, and Destruction at bay, even if many of them are ruthless or fanatical.
-
Stormcast Eternals: Reforged mortal heroes in golden armour, thunder‑teleporting warriors who act as Sigmar’s elite shock troops and the iconic army of the game.
-
Cities of Sigmar: Human, duardin (dwarf), and aelven (elf) armies fighting together from fortified cities, mixing infantry blocks, artillery, and elite troops.
-
Other notable factions:
-
Daughters of Khaine – murderous witch‑elves and snake‑bodied aelves devoted to the god of murder.
-
Fyreslayers – berserker duardin mercenaries covered in glowing ur‑gold runes.
-
Kharadron Overlords – steampunk airship dwarfs with guns, armour, and flying frigates.
-
Lumineth Realm‑lords – magically disciplined high aelves with strong synergy and complex rules.
-
Seraphon – ancient, star‑voyaging lizardfolk who descend to smite Chaos.
-
Sylvaneth – vengeful forest spirits and living trees tied to the life‑realm Ghyran.
-
Grand Alliance Chaos
Chaos represents the followers of the four Dark Gods and related forces, all seeking to corrupt, mutate, and conquer reality itself.
-
Slaves to Darkness: Armoured Chaos warriors and knights who serve Chaos as a whole or swear to specific gods, often led by the Everchosen Archaon.
-
God‑specific armies:
-
Blades of Khorne – melee‑focused berserkers and daemons who worship the god of bloodshed.
-
Disciples of Tzeentch – powerful sorcerers and daemons with heavy magic and ranged tricks.
-
Maggotkin of Nurgle – disease‑ridden plague worshippers with tough, attritional units.
-
Hedonites of Slaanesh – fast, glass‑cannon mortal and daemon revelers focused on speed and excess.
-
-
Skaven: Mad, backstabbing rat‑men using warpstone tech, hordes, and unpredictable weapons.
-
Beasts of Chaos: Bestial raiders and monsters that pour from the wilds to tear down civilization.
Grand Alliance Death
Death is ruled by Nagash, god of Death, whose legions of undead seek to claim every soul in existence.
-
Soulblight Gravelords: Vampires, zombie hordes, skeleton legions, and death‑knights led by powerful vampiric lords.
-
Nighthaunt: Ethereal ghosts and wailing spirits that drift across the battlefield, ignoring many terrain obstacles.
-
Flesh‑eater Courts: Ghouls and twisted monsters who believe they are noble knights and kings, but are actually cannibalistic horrors.
-
Ossiarch Bonereapers: Constructed bone legions, designed as perfect soldiers, marching in disciplined formations.
Grand Alliance Destruction
Destruction are forces that mainly want a good fight—less scheming than Chaos, more about smashing things because it is fun or instinctive.
-
Orruk Warclans: Different flavours of orruks (orcs)—Ironjawz in heavy armour, sneaky Kruleboyz, and savage Bonesplitterz—who live for brutal melee combat.
-
Gloomspite Gitz: Grots (goblins), squigs, troggoths, and spiders, a chaotic horde driven mad by the Bad Moon.
-
Ogor Mawtribes: Big, hungry ogors who crash across the realms as nomadic warbands, supported by monsters.
-
Sons of Behemat: Armies of a few gigantic gargants (giants), each model acting like a walking monster‑castle on the table.
Picking a first faction
New players often choose a faction based on model style first, then consider rules and difficulty. Common beginner‑friendly options include Stormcast Eternals, Soulblight Gravelords, Ogor Mawtribes, Orruk Warclans, and Slaves to Darkness, thanks to relatively straightforward rules and good starter boxes.
